113 - "Five-minute mechanism" program in organic chemistry

It is understood by most instructors and authors in organic chemistry that understanding mechanism, and the "electron-pushing" mechanism in particular, is vital for student understanding and success in the second-year organic chemistry course. A program has been instituted at where students spend the first five minutes of each class drawing a mechanism (a "mechanism a day"). Students are also instructed to ask any questions regarding the assignment. This has allowed the analysis of the common errors that are made in such attempts, while incorporating some aspects of the educational approach known as the "one-minute paper". Common student questions are then addressed during the peer-led team learning workshops. This allows students to have questions thoroughly addressed/discussed with peers outside of lecture time. The success of the program will be discussed.
