825 - Microwave assisted synthesis of mesoporous metal organic framework molecules as catalysis for the oxidation of hardwood lignin

In this work we describe the microwave assisted solvothermal synthesis of meso-porous metal organic framework (MOF) molecules using the ligand 4,4',4”-s-triazine-1,3,5-triyltri-p-aminobenzoate and containing either Fe(III) or both Cu(II) and Fe(III) . The MOF's were used as catalysis in the oxidation of phenylpropane polymer units of hardwood lignin to phenolic monomers. Using the microwave assisted synthetic method MOF's were synthesized in approximately 10 minutes. The catalyst containing Cu(II) and Fe(III) was found to afford the highest yield of syringyl (S) and guiacyl (G) monomers produced by any catalyst yet screened for alkaline lignin oxidation.
